Room Acoustics: Why Sound Treatment Decides Whether Your AV Investment Works

Echo and reverberation can defeat the best speakers and microphones. How acoustic panels - fabric, PET felt, wood wool, and 3D CNC-cut - turn a hard room into a usable one.

A room can have excellent speakers, well-placed microphones, and a premium display and still be exhausting to sit in. The reason is usually the room itself. Hard parallel surfaces - glass, concrete, tile, bare plasterboard - reflect sound back and forth so that every word arrives at the listener several times, slightly delayed. That smearing is what people describe as 'echo' or a room sounding 'hollow', and no amount of spend on electronics fixes it, because the problem happens after the sound leaves the speaker.

Reverberation, intelligibility, and fatigue

Speech is intelligible when the direct sound reaches the ear clearly ahead of its reflections. In an untreated hall, reflections pile on top of the next syllable, so listeners strain to separate words from wash. In a classroom that means students at the back understand less; in a boardroom it means the far end of a video call hears a distant, tinny voice swimming in room tone. Microphones suffer more than ears do - a person can focus attention, a microphone captures everything, reflections included.

Absorption and diffusion, in plain terms

Acoustic treatment works in two ways. Absorptive panels convert sound energy into tiny amounts of heat inside a porous material, so the reflection simply never comes back. Diffusive surfaces scatter reflections in many directions so no single strong echo survives. Most rooms need mainly absorption, placed on the surfaces responsible for the strongest reflections - the wall behind the display, the rear wall, and the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling.

Choosing the panel type

  • Fabric-wrapped panels: the standard choice for boardrooms and lecture halls - strong absorption with a clean, upholstered finish in any colour.
  • PET felt panels: made from recycled polyester, rigid, durable and easy to cut into shapes - well suited to classrooms and public spaces that need robustness.
  • Wood wool panels: cement-bonded wood fibre with a distinctive textured look - absorbs sound while tolerating humidity, useful in halls and corridors.
  • 3D CNC-cut panels: sculpted geometric surfaces that combine absorption with diffusion and double as a design feature on a hero wall.

The goal in a speech-driven room is what specifiers loosely call zero echo control: enough coverage that claps do not ring and voices stop dead instead of trailing. How much surface area to treat, and where, follows from the room's dimensions and use - an auditorium with a multi-channel audio system needs a different treatment plan from a six-seat huddle room.

Acoustics as part of the AV system, not an afterthought

Treatment works best when it is designed alongside the audio and video, not retrofitted after complaints.
